SAP's Application Platform supports Java
Components & Tools of SAP NetWeaver: SAP
NetWeaver Application Server
SAP NetWeaver Application Server brings together a proven
infrastructure with the interoperability and flexibility of Web
services technology. With this component of SAP NetWeaver, you get
support for platform-independent Web services, business applications,
and standards-based development. SAP NetWeaver Application Server
provides an open and reliable infrastructure for deploying highly
scalable Web applications and Web services. Features and functions
include:
- Development -- SAP NetWeaver Application Server provides
an Eclipse-based interactive development environment, called SAP
NetWeaver Developer Studio. As a starting point for all Java
development tools and the integration basis for all infrastructure
components, SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio supports efficient
development of Web Dynpro, Web services, and Java/J2EE business
applications. It supports the development of Java projects on a
large-scale basis for both SAP technologies and standard technologies
such as Web services and J2EE.
- User interface development -- Web Dynpro, part of SAP
NetWeaver Developer Studio, allows you to develop professional user
interfaces for business applications. Based on a powerful and
flexible model-view-controller architecture, it provides a clear
separation of user interfaces with back-end services to ensure fast
responses for highly interactive user interfaces.
- Security -- SAP NetWeaver Application Server supports
state-of-the-art Internet security standards such as HTTPS, Secure
Sockets Layer (SSL), and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
(LDAP). It provides secure communication between all client and
server components, authentication and single sign-on capabilities,
central user administration, digital certificates, digital
signatures, and auditing capabilities.
- Persistence layer support -- With SAP NetWeaver
Application Server, you receive support for platform-independent Web
services and business applications. You also receive support for
standards-based development built on technologies such as J2EE. SAP
NetWeaver Application Server works with all open technology platforms
-- including the leading hardware, operating systems, and databases
-- based on open standards. Open SQL for Java allows developers to
access a relational database in a portable and efficient manner.
- Deployment -- SAP NetWeaver Application Server includes
integrated deployment capabilities to run applications and a
repository to manage versions. It also provides a file storage medium
that combines flexible use of the local file system with secure and
efficient storage of a relational database on a central server.
- Scalability, performance, and high availability -- SAP
NetWeaver Application Server enables scalable, high-performance
business processes, primarily through sophisticated, business-driven
caching and dispatching techniques. High performance is provided by
the component's architecture, along with SAP's proven transaction
capabilities in a distributed environment. High availability is
ensured by automatic distribution of requests to other SAP NetWeaver
Application Server instances, should one server be unavailable.
- Software logistics and life-cycle management --
Sophisticated change management and transport services support not
only the first implementation of an application, but also the
continuous changes that result from business or organizational
changes, or the implementation of additional functions. Comprehensive
software logistics for the development, test, and production
landscape are prerequisites for continuous enterprise operations.
SAP NetWeaver Portal is flexible and secure, and enables you to take
full advantage of your information assets. Features and functions
include:
- Portal-infrastructure management -- SAP NetWeaver Portal
provides a personalized, secure interface that unifies enterprise
applications, information, and processes from both SAP and
third-party sources into a coherent, role-based portal experience.
The portal supports both UNIX and Microsoft Windows servers and is
localized to support more than 20 languages. Its field-tested
capabilities deliver the security, scalability, and performance that
SAP customers expect, along with easy user and content
administration.
- Knowledge management -- SAP NetWeaver Portal provides a
shared set of user services for finding, organizing, and accessing
unstructured content stored in third-party repositories and SAP
content management systems. Powerful classification tools automate
the organization of information. Subject-matter experts and content
managers can publish information to distinct user audiences through
Web-based authoring that simplifies the publishing process. Knowledge
management functions are an important part of SAP's support for
enterprise content management.
SAP Composite Application Framework
SAP Composite Application Framework provides a robust environment
for the design and use of SAP xApps and composite applications that
comply with Enterprise Services Architecture. SAP Composite
Application Framework comprises design tools, methodologies, services
and processes, an abstraction layer for objects, and user interface
and process pattern libraries.
Key features of SAP Composite Application Framework include:
- Model-driven architecture -- SAP Composite Application
Framework supports model-driven application composition, so you can
build applications with as little programming as possible. That means
reduced development and deployment time for new applications and
business-pattern-oriented integration.
- Object access layer -- The object access layer decouples
repositories of underlying systems from business objects and
processes. Thus, SAP xApps can "snap on" to any existing system
landscape. The object access layer is a central interface that
controls communication with participating systems via Web services
and SAP NetWeaver Exchange Infrastructure. SAP xApps needn't know
whether a service is provided by another SAP NetWeaver component or
an external service provider. Tools such as a business object modeler
allow you to create back-end-independent object models for SAP xApps.
The business data of a specific business object can be retrieved from
several independent sources.
- User interface layer -- The framework leverages the
modeling tools, metadata, and run time environment of Web Dynpro --
providing user-interface building blocks that need only to be
configured.
- Collaborative business context -- A collaboration
framework allows you to relate any service or object of SAP NetWeaver
components with any business object. Collaboration objects such as
task, document, and meeting are accessible within the object access
layer. So all composite applications based on SAP Composite
Application Framework can have built-in collaboration functionality.
- User interface patterns and guided procedures -- These
tools accelerate application design and collaborative process
execution through reusability and automatic configuration. Guided
procedures are like best practices patterns, with an easy-to-use,
design-time user interface and run-time process visualization. The
business objects and services of SAP Composite Application Framework
are the foundation for the design of guided procedures. Predefined
workflow patterns support the process definition of guided
procedures. Users can make ad hoc modifications to the business
process.

SAP Integration & Certification Center (ICC) --- J2EE
Application Certification
SAP run certification program testing the installation and
deployment of third-party J2EE applications on SAP Web AS offered by
the SAP Integration and Certification Centers (ICCs).The certification
test ensures that the J2EE application can be installed / deployed on
the SAP J2EE Engine, and that any additional configurations required
for the installation are documented and performed correctly. The SAP
ICC will also execute test scripts against the core functionalities of
the third-party Java application to verify that it does not pose any
risk to the overall health of the SAP system environment.
