The Mei Moses Fine Art Index — created by NYU professors Jianping Mei and Michael Moses to track sale prices of paintings, drawings and sculpture auctioned in New York since 1875 — report that since 1950, on a compound annual basis, art has returned 11.5 percent to 12.5 percent, which is similar in performance to the Standard & Poor's index of 500 stocks. During lengthy armed conflicts in the last century, art indexes outperformed major stock indexes.
