Why Live Off The GridNick Rosen's off-grid.net is the companion to his book of interviews with people who are living off the grid. Rosen's website LandBuddy connects people striving to live off-grid. I have a theory that one of the big reasons why India and China were able to low-bid Americans out of jobs is because of the relatively higher cost of living in America. Before the internet, wages were low in Ireland, India, and China because it was populated by self-sufficient farmers who don't make income in the sense of wages. Americans had difficulty competing with lower wages in those countries because America already experienced the agrarian migration to cities, with the inherent consequence of higher costs for real estate in larger cities. Because the agrarian migration to cities has reached its peak in Ireland, wages in Ireland are now even higher than in America. So I think individual Americans can be competitive internationally if they keep costs low -- by living off the grid. There is a distinction between adopting a self-reliant strategy, preparations for natural disasters, and preparing to survive TEOTWAWKI (The End Of The World As We Know It), when society is WROL (Without the Rule or Law) and the SHTF (Sh-- Hits the Fan).

Zombie Films
Related are the Zombie Apocolypse film genre, where flesh-eating un-dead are hot on their trail of remaining humans. Being bitten by a zombie will turn you into one.
Such films are probably fun to make (as make-up artists and Michael Jackson video fans). There are people who dress up and play zombies.
To many it's fun to see heads and flesh exploding, with blood spurting out. Since zombies traditionally don't run fast or operate weapons, it's like shooting decoy ducks at the amusement park, since the zombies are defenseless. CONTROVERSY: The ethical issue here is whether it's still OK to treat with such indignity people who used to be human. Hitler and other despots justify their atrocities by first de-humanizing some people.

Bug Out Bags (BOB)DO THIS: Time how much time it takes to leave your home in a hurry, such as in event of a home, forest fire, tsunami, volcano, etc. DO THIS: Keep valuables ready to go in a Bug Out Bag (acronymn BOB), typically backpack and everyday carry. DO THIS: Test how far you can walk carrying your filled BOB. MATH TIP: As a rule, carry in a backpack carry 10% of your body weight and no more than 20% of your body weight. Someone who weighs 160 pounds can carry a 16 pound pack but no heavier than a 32 pound pack. | BUY: Backpacks designed for women and people of different physiques. Look in sporting goods stores and websites. |
Get Out of DodgeThe American phrase "Get Out of Dodge" (acronym GOOD) refers to the town of Dodge City in Kansas in the 1800's when it was in the frontier of civilization, and lawless. TIP: To carry extra fuel in automobiles, avoid plastic containers that leak gases which smell up and blow up your car. BUY: An air-tight NATO metal container that doesn't build up static that ignite gasoline when you fill them up. DO THIS: Practice carrying two 5-gallon cans for a mile - uphill. That's 21 pounds each, since 1 gallon = 4.2 pounds. BUY: Pet carriers if you have pets. DO THIS: Practice packing your car as if you're never returning to your home. Then go away for a weekend to see what you missed and don't really need. DO THIS: Have a flashlight and change of clothes and boots under your bed (where you sleep). This is in case something shatters windows, such an earthquake. DO THIS: Practice evacuation routes. Along the way, note gas stations, auto repair, stores, and government facilities along the way. DO THIS: Plan where will you go? How much gas does it take to make a 1200 mile exodus? Who can you trust at your destination? |
TransportationTIP: Cars can break down or run out of gas. So consider several modes of transportation. So consider bringing along a bicycle. Electric bikes? A cargo bike is a human-powered bicycle that tows a two-wheeled cargo chariot. One of the items most requested after the 2011 sunami disaster.
No Microprocessor Electronics1970s-vintage Jeep has no microprocessor electronics, so it would not be affected by EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) from nuclear bombs.
|
|
EMP and Faraday Boxes
CAUTION: When an EMP attack occurs, all electronics are fried. That's why EMP weapons are effective. TIP: To survive EMP attack, store electronics that we would not want to do without in a Faraday shielded box.
TIP: You never know when an EMP will happen. So make it a habit to store electronics you use everyday in a closed faraday box. DO THIS: Build a faraday box to store small electronic items using a metal file carrying case or ammo box. Larger boxes are needed for computer set ups. Line the box so nothing touches the metal. QUESTION: What about an old refrigerator? TIP: Use different bags to separate and group items. |
|
Water NeedsDO THIS: Measure how much water your family consumes over a week. "Potable" water can be consumed with low risk of harm (from micro-organisms or toxic substances). The minimum water intake is 2 quarts per day, more when under straneous activity. MATH TIP: Optimally, each adult person drinks 80 ounces (ten 8 oz glasses) each day, more when doing straneous activity. That's 2 gallons per day per person. So a family of 4 needs 8 gallons per day. WARNING: A 55 gallon barrel full of water weighs 450 pounds. That's too heavy to lift or move, and needs to sit on top of concrete. If you have a bath tub you are not using, the $20 WaterBob bag holds about 100 gallons. We put plywood on top to keep light out. We also put a chemical in it to keep algae from ruining the water. The issue is the hand pump to get water out. |

Water FiltrationWith a good water filter, you can make the 400 gallons of clorinated water in your jacuzzi drinkable. Stagnant water (containing chlorine, lead, pathogenic bacteria, parasites, herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222, trihalomethanes, etc.) goes in on the top bucket. That's why the stainless steel. The black filter elements removes red food coloring. Unlike osmosis, it does not remove minerals people need. Each set of 2 black filters is $100 list, which lasts 3,000 gallons each. To remove Arsenic used in mining, each set of two PF-2 post-reduction elements treats 1,000 gallons (3,785 liters), and reduces filtration flow rate by 15-20%. At $61, that's $__ per gallon. The Big Berkey holds 2 filters which together can filter up to 7 gallons per hour, until its 2.25 gallon capacity is reach. So it fills up in 2 hours because it rated to filter 25 to 30 Gallons (95-115 liters) per 24 hour day (1 gallon/hour).
Note that the flow rates and prices shown do not include the arsenic filter, which adds $244 for the 8 for a total $874. Plus you'll also be waiting 5.2 hours for those 6 gallons since the arsenic filter takes 20% more than the standard 4.3 hours. That's quite a difference in lifestyle than turning on a tap. This is why I also got the $39 spigot accessory so I can see how much water is in the can without lifting the top part and making a mess.

If items such as spigot and filters are not listed on Amazon, go to the manufacturer website at berkeyfilters.com.
A Hydration packof 3 liter (100 ounces of water) fits into an Osprey backpack.

Cooking Water and FoodSolar ovens can reach 300 degrees to stew or bake moist brownies and banana bread, all without burning wood. But they can't be used unless there is enough sunshine. If you're on the move, in the snow, or being rained on, it's nice to have the JetBoil Sumo with a built-in igniter to fire up canisters containing a liquid butane/propane mix (230g for $10 each) that buys at a consistent 9,500 BTU. But if that's all uses, one day you will run out of canisters. The most renewable is dry wood (or other flamables, including pine cones) to burn and are confident about igniting it, the Kelly stainless-steel kettle has a double-wall construction holding water to boil quickly while heat rises to fry pans or something else. But if it's low-cost and light-weight you're looking for (and don't care about the safety risks), build a Penny Wood Stove from cutting and putting holes in cast-off aluminum cans. Due to their popularity, charcoal briquettes are low cost and work well. But they only keep for only a few years.

Washing ClothesClothe washers and driers consume a lot of power (electric or natural gas). So being able to doing wash without power would be a good move. The "mobile" washer (plunger) does its work by holding down clothing while allowing water to flow though the fabric. Laundry detergents are still needed to loosen the dirt and oils on clothing. Crank wringers which press water from clothes ruin clothes, especially buttons, so are not recommended. DO THIS: Consider fast-drying clothing such as the ExOfficio line of underwear MATH: How many garments need to be washed and dried per day in your family? DO THIS: As with other time-consuming chores, time how much it takes to do this. |

Natural gas, in its raw uncompressed state pumped out of the ground is made up of several gases, which include propane as well as butane, ethane and methane. Natural gas is what cities deliver via gas lines into city homes.
Butane is used in pocket lighters because it burns cleaner and does not have the strong odor of other fuels and makes it easier to control the lighter's flame.
Propane is separated from the other gases at gas processing facilities. So it's more expensive than natural gas. The refining process makes propane more of a "green fuel" with less greenhouse-causing gases when discharged.
At its peak temperature, propane burns 48 degrees hotter than natural gas (3,573 degrees compared to 3,525 degrees). When pure oxygen is added, propane torches can get to over 5000 degrees. Propane contains over twice (2.44 times more) the usable energy content of natural gas. Since gas usage is measured by cubic feet in vapor form:
Burning a 100,000 BTU/hr furnace in one hour will use about:
All this means propane tanks requires less frequent fillings than the same size natural gas tank, which stores liquefied natural gas (LNG), compressed natural gas (CNG).
Propane is stored in tanks for sale by the gallon.
1 Gallon of Propane = 27 kWh (Kilowatt Hours) of electricity = approximately 91,500 BTU.
REMEMBER: Propane tanks can be filled only to 80% or less.
A family which uses 1 million BTU per day uses (1,000,000 / 91500) 10.9 gallons per day.
If the family had 400 gallons (in a 500 gallon tank filled to 80% capacity), they would need to refill every 36.7 days.
At $2.50 per gallon, that's $1,000 per month.
A one ton pick up truck with a 500 gallon tank can usually pump around 20 gallons per minute,
So it takes 20 minutes to transfer all 400 gallons.
The largest truck holds 6,000 gals and has a mass flow meter and pump that can deliver around 70 to 80 gallons per minute.
Interstate propane transport trucks have a 11,500 gallon propane tank.
REFERENCE: Propane 101
TIP: Wall-mounted propane/CO detector.
TIP: Get a larger propane tank so you can fill the tank in the spring/summer months when seasonal prices are lowest.
TIP: In even sub-zero cold times, reduce the need to heat up the house by sleeping within a dome tent and good quality sleeping bags. Candle lanterns or Sterno stove can keep the inside of a small tent above freezing.
Foraging for Wild FoodAlthough there are thousands of species of mushrooms, there are really 10 good tasting ones and 10 that can kill you. Get to know those. |
SproutsSprouts can grow in the dark in very little room, with little water, and are nutrious. DO THIS: Try various flavors and see for yourself. But they don't keep long. So always wash them before eating or twice a day, whatever comes first. To have a renewable supply, seeds need to grow into plants which produce more seeds. |
|
Growing Fish and Plants
Growing and preserving your own food is rather basic and great hands-on fun. Hydroponics is growing plants without traditional soil, but medium such as Perlite (a vulcanic rock) which absorbs water for consistent moisture. Plant roots can hang above a styrofoam raft. Florescant have low heat output. LED lights are more power efficient and can adjust output spectrum.
Red light is good for seeds and small plants.
Aquaculture is raising fish in tanks. See YouTube: Cage culture. Aquaponics makes use of a closed (indoor) controlled system to use fish waste (effluent) to grow vegetables (lettuce). MATH: According to YouTube: Purdue University 2:00. Telapia is most popular for its rapid growth and hartiness. But also perch, hybrid striped bass, trout, catfish. Different (and complete) feed is needed for each species. The quality of water exiting fish tanks to a clarifier/settler where mineralization of waste occurs needs to be monitored and controlled. Trace minerals such as iron and magnesium occassionally need to be added to supplement fish diet. 06:00 Bio filters allows a baterial aerobic nitrification process to release ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. Electricity is needed for recirculating pumps and heating. So solar power is popular. HVAC is one of the most expensive components. hugelkultur is |

Storing FoodRefrigerators keep food fresh for only a few days. Frozen foods and a microwave are a great convenience. We can have ice cream with waffles and fruit in minutes. But after a few months, freezer burn spoils frozen foods. And it costs energy (thus money) to keep foods frozen. To have food to eat though each winter, People have used various methods of food storage without electricity. Spud cellars have been around for a very long time to hold potatoes, beets, carrots, and other root vegatables. Food shortages can occur due to the combination of chemicals and climate changes all creating an imbalance in the ecosystem such as drought, cold spells, locusts swarms, etc. |
|
Freeze Dried Food
Freeze drying is done by first freezing the food and then removing moisture within a vacuum. This technique was first used by space astronauts in the 60's because removing moisture reduced the weight which rockets boost to space. Food can be stored several years when preserved in airtight cans and envelopes after freeze drying, to keep animals from getting to them. Freeze dried food comes from several sources:
A freezer and a lot of plastic bags are needed because when #10 cans are opened, the large amount of food inside will start to rot, even if refigerated. And several cans need to be opened just for variety sake. |
Root CellarsTubs with moist sand in a cool place will keep veggies for 2-3 months. |
Celebration Items
Agricola is a paper board game emulating farming. Each farmer worker is represented by a round disk.
Wooden pieces are fences. A deck of occupations.
Each round adds resource pieces to the board.
Actions include gathering, plowing fields, building fences and rooms, harvest, feeding, reproducing.
Reviews by Ryan Metzler, Chris Leigh TIP: While stocking up for emergencies, remember to have on hand items for celebrations, too. Those are what makes memories which creates family bonds. What we remember and cherish being in celebrations and events, however small. DO THIS: If you anticipate that shops will be closed, get age and interest appropriate birthday and christmas presents and decorations ahead of time. DO THIS: Make sure to have enough birthday candles, cake mix, and frosting, or whatever along with an assortment of cards to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and other events. DO THIS: Save special bottles of beverage (such as champange) to consume when a disaster occurs. All this takes the edge off dark and dreary times. |
Pet Care During CrisisOne of the things we realized is the amount of space that pet carriers and feed take. It was good for us to realize now rather than in the heat of an emergency when we had to make a "Sophie's Choice". Rabbits are the quickest supply of food, with the speed they repopulate. Chickens lay eggs. The deer population has grown near exurbia areas over the last few years due to lack of natural predators being kept at bay. |
Human & Pet Waste3 Day Test (redbox), one of the few PG films of its genre, director Corbin Benson has a family going through a long weekend without water, etc. Not available for streaming on Netflix. Toilets with hot running water are one of the nice things about civilization. DO THIS: Practice living without city waste water treatment. Those who have used a porta-potty remember the chemical smell. One can use a shovel, but that requires exposure to the elements. TIP: Try both alternatives. |
Electricity
It's not just torrorists known to be targeting. The effects of global warming is creating storms one season and scorching heat another. All this put stress on the power grid. With PV or generator, electricity needs to be stored in a bank of 12V batteries. A transfer switch connects a generator to your home's wiring system. I prefer propane generators over others. BTW, propane is different from gas (LPG) and not automatically interchangeable. Propane is produced from refining natural gas and crude oil. The pressure on a city natural gas pipeline is 2 to 5 psi. Older lines are half-inch diameter. Newer lines are 3/4 inch. Generators cost less than PV panels. Propane provides cleaner exhaust than gasoline. Gasoline vapors is a major fire hazard, so liquefied petroleum gas can be stored more safely. Gasoline degrades power over time. Most importantly, in the US there is a larger supply of natural gas from US wells than from oil wells. youtube.com/solarcabin A fridge takes 600W. A freezer 500W. Build a root cellar underground. A electric range of 3 elements takes 4,500W. So consider using solar ovens. In the summer, cook outdoors to avoid cooling air from the kitchen stove. In the winter, cook indoors to keep the heat. MATH: To reduce the need for electricity, use pin washin on a clothes line because an electric clothes dryer takes 4,800W, but a washer takes 400W. since an electric air condition is the most hungry, taking 5,000W, have a family stay in a small room, or consider swamp coolers if you're in a dry climate.
According to Generac, a company focused on generator design and production, a 45 gallon cylinder tank can power an 8 kilo-watt generator, producing electrical power for a few appliances for almost 24 hours with normal power consumption. If a 50% load of 1,500 Watts per hour is needed, and a $400 3500w generator uses 1.5 lbs./hr. of propane, running 24 hours = 36 lbs per day. This means each week 252 lbs is needed. Because only 70 lbs. is usable in a 100 lbs. cartridge, 4 of those 100 pound propane cartridges are needed. Gentran's warranty is only 1000 hours.
A 100,000 BTU grill uses ~10 cubic feet an hour on high. 1 gallon = 4.2 lbs TemcoTransformer.com 800-613-2290 or 510.490-2187 Some people need to live in a dry climate. |
Solar Power
The 1250 with two Boulder 30's fully charges in 20-22 hours.
To power up laptops, use the 12V adapter rather than plugging an inverter.
Solar generation of power promises to be usable indoors. But here are this issues I've faced:
|

Self Defense Weapons
The extent of harm that can be inflicted on others with a projectile depends on both the velocity of that projectile and the distance it has to travel (which reduces accuracy and velocity).
One of the major strategies of combat is to have longer accurate range than your enemy. |

|
|
Why Survive? What is the point of living an extra day or month or year longer than others? My grandmother hung on despite cancer because she wanted to see me graduate. What is the purpose of living, anyway? The answer may depends on whether we as individuals believe we are living under the eyes and active manipulations of a God who can reach us from a dimension we cannot imagine beyond time and space. Some live to help others who cannot help themselves, to be the hands and feet of a loving God who is no longer venegenful to those who believe that a part of God, in the person of Jesus Christ, came to erase the spiritual debt of mankind and individuals. I believe this because because I trust that the Bible is a message from God.
