Here is a concise yet in-depth explanation of SAP XI from an inside-out, hands-on approach without the sales hype and repetition typical of tutorials. Topics are linked to certification exam content and other web pages. Detailed diagrams of the infrastructure are accompanied by sequenced descriptions that make the complexity easy to understand. Cross-reference tables plainly cut through the confusion between Perspectives and Project Types.

NW '04 XI 3.0 OKP in SAP Service Marketplace

SAP XI (eXchange Infrastructure) is also called PI (Process Integration) because its integration and intermediation platform and associated design-time tools is a part of the PI usage type in NW2004s.

      • SAP NetWeaver Process Integration (SAP NW PI) supports the integration of third-party business logic components of any vendor on any technology stack.
      • Composite applications make use of model-driven architecture (MDA) and can use Web services standards as well as provide Web services.

Business systems are logical senders/receivers the exchange messages with XI in B2B (Business to Business) and A2A (Application to Application) scenarios.

Within a Systemb landscape, Technical systems or comunication parties.

The SAP XI 3.0 Host comprises of jnlp-server.jar can be invoked directly with transaction SXMB_IFR.

At run-time, the Integration Server is the central distribution engine for handling messages.

      XI

      1. When a message arrives through the listener port of the Integration Engine
      2. Routing, Mapping, Channel Determination referencing the Process/Message Store
      3. If ... the Business Process Engine (BPE) performs Correlation Handling and Process Execution of business processes defined by the SAP Business Process Editor
      4. Adapter Engine

To determine mappings and receivers, the Integration Server uses configuration data from the Integration Directory.

The System Landscape Directory (SLD) central NW component holds software component versions — the smallest shipment units.

Integration Builder (IB) builds collaboration knowledge of cross-component Business Process Management (ccBPM).
Integration Repository (IR) holds Business Process Definitions and abstract interfaces.
Integration Directory (ID) holds Collaboration Profiles and Collaboration Agreements. The Process Editor stores Business Process Configuration and Routing Rules there.

The Runtime WorkBench monitors (performs "is-alive" checks) of components and enables customization of component runtime settings.
Business partners can use the SAP Partner Connectivity Kit to send messages formatted in the SAP XI Protocol.
